![]() I tried getting rid of the statue in my living room but it just leads to contention and arguing with my wife who loves it and who spent like $60 on that thing. They sell their crosses to each other and we sell our statues to each other. ![]() So by the cross standard, we’re no different than anyone else. We’re no better than other Christians by not using the cross because instead of that, we’re using the Christus all over the place. And that’s why I’m led to think that maybe employing the Christus more and more might not be the message we want to convey to investigators who come from another background of using graven images. Even though their intention was sincere, it’s still against the very basic Ten Commandments. but I felt the urge to say Hey! Stop doing that! In hindsight, it only would have brought unwanted attention and embarrassment to all of us. And nobody said a word to them, fearing to interrupt their worship, and I certainly didn’t want to say anything, I didn’t know who they were with. Naturally, it was packed and there were many visitors, some of whom got down on their faces and started praying to the Christus. So why do we use it? What purpose does it serve besides just as a teaching tool for visitors? One experience that really bothered me was when I went to visit temple square for the first time a couple years ago during general conference. The commandment doesn’t say not to worship any graven, it says not to make any graven image. But I’m just having some shower thoughts. I understand that we don’t worship or pray to the Christus like Catholicism might teach and that the purpose is to help visitors understand that we are indeed Christians. While reading this weeks portion of come follow me, I remembered how Abinadi chastised Noah and his priests for not obeying the 10 commandments, including the second commandments which says to not make any graven image.
